So, how does this salad look to you? Yummy, huh? Looks pretty healthy too, right?
Not so fast.....
Would you put gummy bears on a salad? How about some chocolate chips? No, why not?
"Because that's candy, Rebecca, duh!!"
But, those little cranberry things have 23 grams of sugar per serving ....that is almost 6 teaspoons of sugar - about the same as a serving of gummy bears.
Ok, so, how about candied walnuts? Those are heart healthy, right? Well, they are a bit better with 2 teaspoons of sugar in a serving.
Now, Im not saying that you have to avoid all sugars, but there is no denying that if you are eating the standard American diet, you are getting too much.
According to the American Heart Association (AHA),
the maximum amount of added sugars you should eat in a day are:
Men: 150 calories per day (37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons).
Women: 100 calories per day (25 grams or 6 teaspoons).
And, most of us are overweight and obese because of it.
And, it just isn't fair if we don't even know we are eating "dessert" when we think we are eating a healthy salad.
And, because of the sugar, that salad will make us crave more sweets after we eat it! So not fair!
So, what can you do?
